Sometimes in life things are hard to see, even when they are right in front of us. We can look at what surrounds us, but how clearly do we really see those things? Is our vision cloudy and we see men as trees walking? Or is our vision completely clear so that we can see what God wants to do? There is an old saying: "The eyes are the window to the soul." If your eyes are the window to your soul, what does your vision tell you about your spiritual life?
I know from firsthand experience what it is like to not be able to see clearly. I have had glasses and/or contacts since I was nine years old (that's 12 years). I can barely remember what it was like to have perfect vision. I don't notice it much throughout the day because I usually have contacts in and this makes it seem like my vision is good. However, as soon as I take my contacts out at night, I realize once again just how blurry my vision is. I stumble around in the dark because, although my eyes are open, I can't see clearly enough to get where I need to go. When you haven't opened up your spiritual eyes in so long, your vision is just like that: cloudy and unclear. You are misguided, you stumble in the dark, and you can't see clearly enough to get where you need to go. You can't do what God is asking with your eyes closed.
There's a reason we sleep with our eyes closed. It is a symbol of rest. Closing your eyes is a passive response. Keeping your eyes open in the midst of exhaustion is the true test of your awareness. If you allow God to open your spiritual eyes even in the midst of life's trials and exhaustion, you will send a message to the world that you are active for Jesus. Once you close your eyes, you show that you are not working for Jesus like you should be. Maybe we all need a little wake up call. It's time to open your eyes! Oh God, open our eyes so that we may see what you have for us.
We can't recover from a setback stumbling around in the dark. If you've had your spiritual eyes closed because of heartbreak and scars from the world, Jesus can bring healing. Just like He did with the blind man, He can open your eyes. You might not see clearly at first, but you have to believe that Jesus will heal you. When you finally begin to believe, He will bring that complete healing and restore your spiritual sight. It is not enough to have your eyes open, but for your vision to be completely clear means God can reveal what He has in store for your life. We don't want to see men as trees walking. We need our spiritual eyes to be open and clear. We need to be active rather than passive for Jesus. We need to look forward and praise God for what He has already done and what He will continue to do. Let's believe with open eyes that He will do what He said He would do. Let this be our prayer: "Lord, open my eyes to see what is right in front of me and help me understand your will for my life. Please don't let me miss the opportunity to witness to someone who needs you. Help me recognize what you want to do in my life and how I can point others to you. Amen."
